The Kingdom of Arakan

The Kingdom of Arakan developed as a unique maritime bridge connecting South and Southeast Asia. From its ancient Indianized origins and early seafaring contacts to the rise of the cosmopolitan Mrauk-U Empire, Arakan grew into a powerful, multicultural state shaped by intersecting Buddhist and Islamic traditions. Its centuries of independence drew to a close in 1784 following conquest by the Burmese Konbaung Dynasty.
